More seats

The new middle school will address the overcrowding of schools in the Okanagan Mission area.  Space will be opened up in the elementary schools through moving the Grade 6's into the new middle school.  It is estimated about 200 students would be moved out of Anne McClymont, Dorothea Walker and Chute Lake schools. “No firm decision has yet been made” says Planning Manager, David Widdis, "regarding the transition of the students to the middle school. The Board will have those discussions in the coming months."

Curriculum

One of the big advantages for students in this age category (12 to 15) will be the opportunity to learn in a facility designed to address the specific needs of this age group. This will include a higher ceilinged gymnasium that what they would find in an elementary school plus specialty rooms for additional programming. “The school will have a drama room, music room and art room and a maker space,” says David Widdis, “Currently the maker space is defined to have some wood working tools/hand tools where students will have an opportunity to make small objects.”  These specifics will be decided between the new principal (not yet determined) and the Superintendent of Schools.”

Community School

The new school will include a Neighbourhoods Learning Centre (NLC). The NLC label provides additional space for community  programs allowing for exclusive use of designated community rooms. This includes access to the gym on weekends, holidays and outside the regular school year.
